Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Establish Artificial Intelligence Data Center in India

AI Data Center
India stands as a prime location for data centres because of its inexpensive data services and swiftly increasing online population.

The parent firm of Google the Alphabet conglomerate is set to invest fifteen billion dollars to build an artificial intelligence data center in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.

The facility, to be established in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam city, is going to be a part of the worldwide network of Google of AI centers distributed over twelve different countries.

"This represents the biggest AI hub that we are committing funds to across the globe, outside of the United States of America," Google Cloud's chief executive announced at an event in the capital city of Delhi recently, noting that the financial commitment is to be distributed across the coming five years.

This declaration occurs when American President Donald Trump has been encouraging companies from the United States to give priority to investments within the country.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing

India has become a prime location for AI data centres. India's low data costs and swiftly increasing online population have established it as a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for major tech firms.

"The infrastructure will bring our cutting-edge technology to businesses and consumers in the nation, enhancing AI development and promoting progress across the country," said Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.

Specifics of the Project

A formal agreement to conclude the initiative is scheduled for signing this Tuesday, local government officials said.

"This represents a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, progress, and global standing," said the state's technology minister Minister Nara Lokesh.

The project will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with green energy infrastructure and an broader fiber-optic system.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

The project is part of the local administration's strategy to develop 6GW of data center capability by 2029.

Computing facilities are physical facilities that house the computing and networking equipment that entities use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.

These include computer servers, data storage systems and network equipment like network routers and security firewalls, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.

Investment Incentives

Within the state, the state authorities has been providing subsidised land and energy to attract international investors.

Industry Growth

India's data centre industry has expanded quickly over the past five years, surpassing the 1GW capability milestone in the year 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 capacity.
