José Mourinho Shows Desire in Benfica Managerial Position

Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in assuming as the new head coach of SL Benfica, after the exit of Bruno Lage.

Background of the Situation

Bruno Lage was dismissed after the Portuguese club experienced a surprising 3-2 defeat to Qarabağ in the Champions League.

Club president Rui Costa stated that the organization aims to appoint a new manager by Saturday, though he refused to speculate on specific candidates.

Sources indicate that the Portuguese manager is open to a return to Portugal's soccer, over two decades after he departed for Chelsea FC.

Mourinho's Past with the Eagles

Mourinho started his coaching journey with Benfica in the year 2000, though his stay was short-lived, spanning only ten games.

He later achieved prominence with FC Porto, leading them to six titles, such as the UEFA Champions League in 2004.

From that point, he has coached top clubs across Europe, including Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahce.

Potential Challenges and Fixtures

If hired, Mourinho would confront his former team Chelsea FC in the UCL on 30 September.

The team is also scheduled to play Newcastle United and Real in the league stage.

Currently, the club ranks sixth in the Primeira Liga, five points behind leaders FC Porto.

Political Background

This move to change the manager coincides with forthcoming presidential votes on October 25.

Joao Noronha Lopes, the favorite, has allegedly expressed preference in Rúben Amorim of Man United.

The president emphasized that the choice was made solely for football reasons and not for political gains.

"I'm not here to protect any roles," Costa stated. "The goal is to ensure the best future for Benfica."
