Police End Search for Four-Year-Old Child Missing in Australia's Wilderness

Australian authorities have ended the operation for a young boy who has been lost in the outback for almost twenty-one days, after fresh attempts proved unsuccessful to locate any traces of the youngster.

Chronology of Occurrences

The child was spotted playing near his home on a remote rural property in the vicinity of Yunta, about 300km from Adelaide, on September 27th.

His grandmother briefly departed for about a short period before returning, only to find the youngster missing, triggering one of the most extensive land and air operations in local past.

Current Status

Police - who do not think there was criminal activity - say they will persist investigating, but that the case has become a "recovery mission".

Recently, police briefly reduced the search, only to resume it on this week alongside 80 military personnel.

"Commissioner Grant Stevens said officials were scanning a wider zone based on new assessments from survival and search professionals, rather than any fresh leads."

Search Difficulties

On the end of last week, police announced that the new search had not found any signs of Gus.

"The reality that Gus is a young child, the landscape is extremely difficult, unforgiving and affected by variable climate has made the mission difficult and more challenging for those participating," officials said in a release.

About a vast area - an zone about two times the size of a major city - has now been scanned, and a 12-person unit set up recently is anticipated to carry on examining. Officials have not ruled out additional operations of the property in the coming days.
