Relatives of African American College Student Discovered Suspended from Campus Tree Engage Civil Rights Lawyer

The relatives of a African American student located suspended from a campus tree on a college campus in the state of Mississippi has retained renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump as questions persist regarding the unexplained demise.

Initial Reports and Continuing Inquiry

Recently, personnel at Delta State University found the body of the young man Trey Reed close to campus sports areas. University head of security Michael Peeler indicated that the student appeared to have died by suicide and that there were no signs of criminal activity, but suspicions have grown within the community.

As authorities and the official bodies look into the death, attorneys assisting the family are conducting their own investigation and plan to seek an independent autopsy.

“Trey was a young man bursting with hope and kindness, deeply loved and valued by all who knew him. His relatives and the student body merit a thorough, separate examination to determine the truth about what happened.”

Calls for National Investigation

Meanwhile, a congressman, a local congressman, called for the FBI to look into the case.

“The FBI has the tools and expertise necessary to conduct a comprehensive, unbiased examination, and this is urgent,” Thompson commented in a announcement.

Federal authorities indicated that it is following the situation and “willing to look into” if there is evidence of a possible breach of federal law.

Historical Context

This institution in the area, close to the neighboring state border, is positioned only about a short distance from a site infamously tied with the tragic murder of a young Black youth. A memorial at the local waterway site commemorates the recovery in history of the victim’s brutalized remains in the water.

The student’s case soon generated interest on social media, and hearkened back the time of racial injustice of racial terror and the brutal murders of African Americans at the hands of mobs in Mississippi and across the southern United States.

Medical Findings and Public Response

The local official denied rumors that the student was discovered with broken limbs. In a release referenced by local news outlets, the coroner said that his department conducted a preliminary examination and determined the individual did not suffer any lacerations, injuries, fractures, or injuries suggesting an assault.

The NAACP remarked in a message: “While early accounts offered no proof of criminal acts, it is reasonable to feel our doubt amidst increasing racially motivated violence directed toward our communities in this nation.”

“So while we await more official autopsy reports and information, we offer this piece of history with a strong belief: Our community have not in the past taken our own lives from branches.”

University Actions

In a message posted on the institution’s Facebook page, the university president stated that the university was returning to normal while continuing to mourn the loss. He noted that university representatives were staying in touch with the loved ones.

“We understand that we can never fully repair this wound. We continue to cooperate with investigators. We are verifying that all the details necessary is shared to officials. And we remain hopeful for clarity.”

Instruction were suspended on Monday at the university, as were activities to celebrate the 100-year milestone of its opening.
