The former president Warns of Pulling of 2026 World Cup Fixtures from Boston, Olympics from LA

Ex-president Trump has once again announced he would influence FIFA to relocate global soccer tournament games from a venue based on municipal political climate, with the Boston region becoming the most recent urban area to face such statements from the American leader. Furthermore, Trump remarked he would contemplate similar action against Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics due to potential security concerns.

Jurisdictional Limits and Possible Pressure

Although Trump does not have official jurisdiction to directly relocate either tournament, he is able to lobby the international organizations managing each tournament to move locations.

Context of Remarks

The remarks were made during a press event with Javier Milei, who was at the presidential residence following the revelation of a massive rescue package for the Argentine economy. Toward the conclusion of the gathering, a journalist inquired Trump about a current public disturbance in Boston where law enforcement were targeted and a cruiser was ignited. The correspondent also asked if the situation could lead to the removal of organizing rights for the larger football competition.

“It's possible to take them away,” the former president said about the soccer games, scheduled to be staged at the Massachusetts arena. “Their mayor is not good … she is far-left, and they are dominating areas of the city. That is a major claim, isn't it?”

Urban Disturbances and Public Safety Concerns

Public disruptions, a online-fueled trend where large crowds gather on public avenues after dark to perform stunts, have emerged as a repeated issue in US urban areas since the lockdown closures. Current incidents have turned violent in Massachusetts, notably in downtown. Nevertheless, these events are typically not seen as linked to any specific political ideology.

“In cases where a mayor is doing a bad job, and I believe exist unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni [Infantino], who is phenomenal, and suggest we should relocate it to a different city,” he said during the event. “He'd do that. He wouldn’t love the action, but he’d do it. Very easily, he’d do it.”

Political Connections

The organization's head has made no secret his efforts to be publicly aligned with Trump prior to the 2026 event, scheduled to be organized in 11 cities across the US along with two in the northern neighbor and multiple in Mexico. The organization's leader has participated at several White House functions, had Trump present the Club World Cup award after the championship match, and has even postponed his the group's assembly to join Trump on a visit to the Arab region earlier in 2025.

Earlier Warnings

Despite this, Trump from threatening the removal of soccer matches from additional American venues. On September 25, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis faced parallel statements, with Trump stating both locations were “led by radical left lunatics who are clueless what they're managing,” while questioning the security conditions of both cities and claiming that matches could be shifted.

Organizational Statement

FIFA vice-president Montagliani rejected Trump’s claims when he commented subsequently at a conference in England.

“This is our competition, our responsibility, we decide such choices,” Montagliani said. “With all due respect to sitting presidents, the sport is transcends any individual and the game will survive their tenure and their policies. That’s the essence of this sport, that it is more significant than one leader and beyond a nation.”

On Tuesday, Trump’s answer to a query about the Massachusetts city included a comparable warning regarding the LA Olympic event.

“When I perceived Los Angeles was not prepared properly, I would move it to a different city if I had to,” Trump stated. “For the Olympics I’d probably have to get a different kind of approval, but we would proceed.”

Any approval Trump alluded to would need to come via the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The head, the newly elected president, was elected to her post in March and has so far not appear together with him, although she indicated that she desires a meeting with Trump at eventually.

Additional Criticism

Trump also condemned Gavin Newsom’s handling of the LA wildfires, remarking that a parallel incident could cause the relocation of the event.

“If he is uncooperative, we’re gonna have to be strict,” Trump commented.

His statement was similarly clear for Boston.

“They better address these issues,” he remarked. “That is my message.”
