The nation Faces Most Severe Drought in Decades, Pushing Countless People Toward the Brink

Close to Seqalbia by Hama, crop lands are expected to be ripe and abundant with harvest.

Instead, one agriculturist's land lies barren, generating just a fraction of its typical output.

"This year has been catastrophic because of the drought," explained the 46-year-old grower.

His fields generated merely 190kg per dunum—well under the expected quantity seen in a good year.

"{We did not recoup what we invested; we've faced losses. There's no way to fund next season's planting," he continued.

With two teenage family members to provide for, he is borrowing funds from relatives to survive.

Widespread Emergency

This plight is echoed across Syria, where the most severe rain shortage in many years has cut crop yields by nearly half.

A estimated wheat shortfall of over two and a half million tonnes looms this season—enough to feed the annual food requirements of more than 16.25 million individuals.

Increasing Hunger

Without additional food aid or the means to import grains, the condition may intensify significantly.

More than 14,000,000 Syrians—around 60% the people—already face difficulties to eat enough.

Among them, millions endure severe hunger, with over a million in dire situations.

Water levels has decreased by almost a large percentage, damaging three-quarters of dependent agricultural land.

"This means the line between families remaining in their communities or needing to leave," commented an representative.

Household Hardships

Farming households are offloading animals to compensate for lost earnings, limiting their daily diet.

Malnutrition levels among young ones and pregnant women are rising.

Wheat is a staple commodity in Syria, used for bread and traditional dishes—cheap necessities that are now becoming more expensive in value.

In the case of a mother aged 39, affording food has become extremely challenging.

Having several children, she relies on her children' income, which fall short of basic expenses.

"Sometimes we resort to funds only to buy bread," she explained.

Last year, a package of flatbread was priced at five hundred money, but now it is 4,500.

To feed her household, it takes two portions a day—a cost of 9,000 currency units, excluding other necessities.

Government and Foreign Response

The emergency presents a major challenge for the administration, which is striving to reconstruct the economy after a long period of unrest.

Support groups are offering financial help for those in need, but representatives note that these are stopgap measures.

"We're trying to enable farmers in the farming industry," said a program director.

Financial payments have been given to small farmers who lost their entire yield.

But, after years of conflict, Syria's agricultural sector was already impacted by economic crisis, broken irrigation systems, and unusable land.

Resource Crisis

In critical farming regions, crop fields require several irrigation cycles per season, but as a result of lack of rain, many growers are unable to sustain.

"A agricultural worker's primary challenge is obtaining resources," stated a regional official.

Irrigation depends on energy, and costs have skyrocketed sharply, hitting eleven thousand to twelve thousand pounds per unit.

High energy costs and frequent outages have left equipment out of reach for numerous agriculturalists.

Long-Term Solutions

One goal for the authorities is funding water infrastructure—like renewable energy watering systems—to ensure resources more available.

Yet such plans require years and resources—luxuries that growers lack at present.

Thus, for countless citizens around the nation, there is only one thing to rely on in the upcoming period: pray for precipitation.
