'Those concluding hours tested every limit': UK pair complete extraordinary voyage in Down Under after paddling across Pacific Ocean

One more day. One more session navigating merciless swells. Another round of raw palms holding onto unyielding oars.

However following over 15,000 kilometers at sea – a monumental half-year voyage over the Pacific Ocean that included near brushes with cetaceans, defective signaling devices and cocoa supply emergencies – the sea had one more challenge.

Powerful 20-knot gusts near Cairns continuously drove their compact craft, their boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now frustratingly within reach.

Supporters anticipated on shore as a planned midday arrival shifted to 2pm, then 4pm, then dusk. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at the Cairns marina.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe expressed, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we honestly thought we weren't going to make it. We ended up outside the channel and considered swimming the remaining distance. To finally be here, following years of planning, just feels incredible."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – set out from Peruvian shores in early May (an initial attempt in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

During 165 ocean days, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her partner rested a bare handful of hours in a cramped cabin.

Endurance and Obstacles

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a seawater purification system and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the women counted on an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for limited energy demands.

For much of their journey through the expansive ocean, they lacked directional instruments or location transmitters, turning them into a "ghost ship", hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, navigated shipping lanes and endured raging storms that, on occasion, disabled all electrical systems.

Groundbreaking Success

And they've kept rowing, stroke by relentless stroke, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the first all-female pair to cross the southern Pacific by rowing, continuously and independently.

And they have raised over eighty-six thousand pounds (A$179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Existence Onboard

The pair did their best to keep in contact with the world beyond their small boat.

During the 140s of their journey, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with another 1,600 kilometers ahead – but allowed themselves the indulgence of unwrapping a portion to mark the English squad's winning the Rugby World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, hailing from inland Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life before her solo Atlantic crossing during 2022 establishing a record.

She has now mastered another ocean. But there were moments, she conceded, when they doubted their success. Starting within the first week, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our energy was failing, the freshwater system lines broke, however following multiple fixes, we managed a bypass and barely maintained progress with reduced energy for the rest of the crossing. Each time problems occurred, we just looked at each other and went, 'naturally it happened!' But we kept going."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. The remarkable aspect was our collaborative effort, we problem-solved together, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she said.

Rowe is from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she rowed the Atlantic, walked the southwestern English coastline, scaled the Kenyan peak and cycled across Spain. There might still be more.

"We had such a good time together, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions collectively once more. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
