Trump Persists in Attacks on Taylor Greene Amid Call to Unseal Epstein Files

Greetings and salutations to the US politics ongoing coverage. This is Tom Ambrose, and I will be bringing you all the most recent developments over the next few hours.

Trump Rejects Marjorie Taylor Greene's Safety Concerns

We begin with the development that Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Republican lawmaker Representative Greene on Sunday, despite his shift on opposing the release of the Epstein files.

He continued to dismiss her claim that his remarks were endangering her and said he did not think anyone was targeting her. The congresswoman said on the previous day that Trump’s online criticism had triggered a wave of threats aimed at her.

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene,” he remarked, speaking of the congresswoman. “I don’t think her life is in danger... I don’t think anybody cares about her,” Trump told the press before entering his presidential plane on Sunday evening.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US House of Representatives member from Georgia who was long known as a Trump loyalist, has recently taken positions at odds with the president. She noted on Saturday she has been contacted by private security firms expressing concern for her safety and that harsh attacks against her have in the past resulted in death threats.

Jeffrey Epstein Documents Disclosure Initiative

This dispute occurred while Trump urged his GOP colleagues in Congress to vote for the release of records concerning the late disgraced financier Epstein, changing his earlier opposition to such a move.

Trump’s post on his social media platform followed Speaker Johnson said earlier that he thought a decision on releasing DOJ files in the Epstein investigation should help dispel allegations “that he [Trump] has something to do with it”.

He posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday: “GOP lawmakers should support unsealing the Epstein files, because we have no secrets.

“Now is the moment to move on from this Democrat Hoax orchestrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to distract from the Great Success of the Republican Party, including our recent Victory on the Democrat ‘Shutdown’,” he added.

While the President and Epstein were photographed together years back, the president has said the two men had a disagreement before Epstein's legal troubles. Emails disclosed recently by a House committee indicated the disgraced financier, who took his own life in prison in 2019, believed the President “knew about the girls,” though it was not clear what that statement meant.

Additional Updates

  • Republican congressman Congressman Massie had questioned Trump over whether the commander-in-chief was making a “final attempt” to keep the full files on the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein from being disclosed by initiating a new probe. Massie and Democratic congressman Representative Khanna, the two US representatives leading the cross-party effort to make all the documents held by the government public both expressed new worries about the steps by the administration.
  • The United States conducted a further strike on an alleged narcotics smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific on Saturday, killing three people aboard, the Pentagon announced on the following day. “Intelligence verified that the boat was involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and carrying narcotics,” the US Southern Command stated in a message on social media.
  • The President indicated the US may open talks with President Maduro, the Venezuelan president, who is under growing scrutiny from the US government amid a huge US military buildup in the Caribbean region. “We may be having some discussions with the Venezuelan leader, and we’ll see how that turns out. Venezuela would want to talk,” the commander-in-chief said on Sunday, in one of the initial indications of a potential way to defusing the increasingly tense situation in the area.
  • Donald Trump on the weekend dismissed worries about right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson's recent discussion with a far-right activist known for his anti-Jewish sentiments, which has created a division within the Republican party. Trump supported the host, noting the ex-media personality has “said positive remarks about me over the years.” He added if he chooses to interview the activist, whose supporters consider themselves working to preserve America’s cultural heritage, then “individuals have to decide.” He did not criticize the commentator or Fuentes.
  • Trump suggested on Sunday that he intends to have a discussion with NYC's mayor-elect Mamdani and stated they will “work something out”, in what could be a detente for the GOP leader and Democratic rising star who have portrayed one another as political foils. He has for months criticized Mr Mamdani, incorrectly describing him as a “socialist” and forecasting the decline of his city, NYC, if the progressive were elected.
  • A collective of 17 transgender US air force members has sued the federal government for refusing them retirement benefits and entitlements. The legal filing, filed in a US court, characterizes the administration's action against them as “illegal and unjustified”.
